How different managers perceive globalization

How different managers perceive globalization

Dear friends,

As a global acting executive search company we have the chance to see and talk with a lot of decision makers all over the world; recently from UK, Germany, USA, India, Singapore, Russia, UAE, Pakistan, Switzerland, Canada, Greece, Bulgaria, Chile etc.  In regard to a lot of recent interviews with managers we have seen, that executives perceive globalization in very complex ways, depending on the origin and (work)experience of the individual. As followed we submit some conclusions, which we like to share with our followers and globalizing companies.

Everybody agrees that the main driver of globalization is international trade and sharing business interests in a large and growing common community. But we also have to be aware that managers may have widely divergent attitudes to globalization and personal decisions, because they may have strongly different perceptions on opportunities and threats about globalization. It is therefore important for the companies to recognize this different attitude and be ready to confront them.

Taking over businesses or hiring executives in foreign markets is nice but we always have to be aware of, that new people have very different mindsets and without special training will remain in there thinking. Therefore, it is very important for global organizations to cultivate a global mindset.

Here some examples what kind of phrases can mean threats or chances for the individual:

•corruption cannot be avoided

•Environmental sustainability is good, but….

•Foreign influences are changing values and beliefs

•International media is raising global transparancy

•Gap between rich and poor is increasing

•Religious values influence the behavior of their followers

•Diseases spread more quickly

•National boundaries are meaningless

•Outsourcing creates jobs

•etc.

Firms see global opportunities, whether or not they are already operating as a multinational. ‘Think global act local’ is a popular corporate slogan. But this can mean different things to any executive.

Nowadays there is a strong public debate about the topic but who has the right answers? When one looks at media or politicians nobody can really bring order to the actual chaos. Media and politicians are mostly local or regional oriented. The value makers of today might be the multinationals, but they are confronted today with the recoil of nations and various organizations against globalization.  Therefore, we think it is an absolute necessity that each organization rethinks and fine-tunes their values and communicates them across their executives and staff in order to abandon risks and ‘accidents’ that have happened recently with very large and prominent organizations.

As an executive search company we can have a great part in bringing the right people on board by understanding job descriptions, goals and very important, the values of an organization.

Best regards,
