Chile - Mining and Energy

The price for Energy Consuming in Mining will increase about 80% until 2025 impelled by desalination
Published on Jan 22, 2015 (Editec)

Mining concentrators are the main  demanders of electricity, but impulsion and desalination plants explain the 30% of total increase of industry consumption.
The factories of desalination and the  water impulse to mining projects are expensive but necessary. In average 70% of operations costs of these plants corresponds to energy.
The expected energy consumption for all mining will increase about 80% until 2025, from 21,9 TWh to 39.5 TWh (that equals one million TWh) according to Cochilco. Thereby considering the most  probably scenery of copper production in 2025, this, if actual mining plants still keep working and that a big percentage of projects work out, feasible and pre feasible considered by the organism in their investing portfolio comes into operation at that time.

From the total power demand in 2025, 30% is explained by water consumption, which is expected to increase by 66% over the next decade compared to 2014, considering above variables.
The increase of this demand will be supplied with 76% sea water while the rest will be supplied from fresh water, indicated by Cochilco.
The mining concentrators are the principal users of energy in their plants, but it is exactly the desalination and impulsion of water where the major increase is settled between 2014 and 2025, indicates  the report.
